Dr. Byron Wratee

Assistant Professor of African and African American Spiritualities

Dr. Byron Wratee is Assistant Professor of African and African American Spiritualities at Villanova University. He also serves on the faculty of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana, a school of theology that meets in New Orleans each summer. A systematic and comparative theologian, his research explores Black spirituality, Black Catholic studies, Africana religions, mysticism, ethics, and theological anthropology, with particular attention to the thought of Howard Thurman. He holds a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Boston College, an M.Div. from Emory University, and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. A lifelong singer and musician, Dr. Wratee is a pastoral musician and lay preacher. He also serves as a Captain and Human Resources officer in the United States Army Reserve. He lives in Great Mills, Maryland, with his wife, the Rev. Dr. Andrea L. Cummings-Wratee, a United Methodist pastor and womanist practical theologian.
